An air weapon that satisfies both conditions is classified as a sub-threshold air weapon and does not require an arms licence under the Arms Rules 2016.
What Does "Below 20 Joules" Mean in Practice?
Most CO2 pistols sold at Sahibzada Gun House are in the 3–7 joule range — well below the 20-joule threshold. For context, 20 joules translates to roughly 820 FPS with a standard 0.53g pellet. The vast majority of sub-20-joule CO2 guns fire at 300–500 FPS.
Weapons That DO Require a Licence
An air weapon requires full arms licence compliance if it:
- Exceeds 20 joules of muzzle energy, OR
- Has a bore greater than 4.5mm (e.g., .22 or .25 calibre above the energy threshold)
These are treated the same as conventional firearms and require a valid Arms Licence (AL) issued by district authorities.
Do CO2 Cartridges, Pellets, or BBs Require a Licence?
No. CO2 cartridges (12g, 88g), lead pellets, and steel BBs are not classified as arms or ammunition under the Arms Act. They can be purchased freely by any adult. No licence is required to own, transport, or use these consumables.
What Sahibzada Gun House Requires
Even for sub-threshold, licence-free air weapons, we have implemented the following compliance process to protect both our customers and our business:
- Aadhaar Verification: Both sides of Aadhaar card must be uploaded at checkout. This confirms identity and minimum age (18+).
- Contact Details: Name, phone number, and delivery address are retained for compliance records.
- Data Handling: All Aadhaar data is stored encrypted and deleted after order fulfilment in line with UIDAI guidelines.
For weapons above the threshold, a copy of your valid Arms Licence must be submitted and verified before dispatch.

Do I need a licence to buy a CO2 pistol in India?

Can I carry a CO2 pistol in public?
